As Ethan and I were walking to church Sunday morning, I asked him what he was going to ask Santa to bring for Christmas. He looked at me and asked, “Why do I need to do that?”
“Well, don’t you want to see Santa this year and let him know what you’d like?”
He gave me a look of thinly veiled impatience and said, “No. Why would I want to do that? I’ve never seen Santa before.”
After I explained that he had talked to Santa before (at the Park District party, once), he followed up with, “Besides, I don’t think Santa really exists.”
Hmmm. Parental toughie. Do you keep the fantasy alive and feed the consumerism of the holidays, or fess up to the truth? My response, “Really? Then who puts the presents in our stockings?”
He had that already figured out, of course. “I think our friends or neighbors must come in and leave us presents. What do you think?”
“Well, I think there are a lot of mysteries in life we don’t know the answer to.”
Come on, he’s only five (and a half, maybe … but kindergarten). Does he have to be so logical that he’s figuring it out already? We’ll have to see as Christmas draws closer if he maintains his “no Santa” stance.
