Watching Venus and the Moon

Tonight, as we were getting ready for bed, Ethan and I decided to watch the sky get dark from the spare bedroom window. As we were looking at the sky, Ethan noticed Venus hovering over the neighbor’s roof.

He got very excited when I explained we were seeing a planet, not a star. So we had to talk about whether we could see some of the other planets he knows the names of (Jupiter and Neptune) and if we could see Earth if we went up into the air. Finally, we decided to go outside and look at the stars for a few minutes.

John decided to come with us, and we spent a nice 10 minutes sitting on the sidewalk by the driveway, watching the moon and Venus. (We also saw a bonus satellite go by, pretty cool.)

Now Ethan is very (even more) excited about our upcoming camping trip and the prospect of seeing hundreds of stars after we get away from the city lights.
