Enjoy it while it lasts

Ethan is a fantastic big brother — and most of the time he clearly loves his little sister (who is home) and is fiercely protective of his little brother in the hospital. But he is, after all, still a six-year-old who is adjusting to having to share his place in the sun.

When Veronica first came home from the hospital, Ethan waffled between wanting to take her out to show her off (and being very disappointed when no one was outside), and getting very jealous of all the attention she was getting when we did take her out. We were going for a walk after dinner on the 3rd night Veronica was home, and had run into several people who were excited to see the new baby.

After the third or fourth encounter, Ethan asked me, “Why does everyone pay so much attention to her and not to me?” (Talk about making your heart break.)

I explained to him that Veronica was a novelty right now — everyone knew him, but she was new and that made her exciting. Without missing a beat, Ethan turned to Veronica and said, “Enjoy it while you can, Veronica. Soon Colin will be coming home and then he’ll get all the attention.”
