“Terrific”

Ethan finally was able to meet Veronica this afternoon. He was so excited, he was jumping up and down in the lounge while Megan (the nurse who coordinates the visits) was explaining everything to him.

When we got into the NICU, he very seriously scrubbed his hands and arms (up to his elbows), then put on the giant yellow gown to protect Veronica from any germs. He was trying hard not to bounce too much, but he was oozing excitement about finally getting to meet his little sister.

We decided I would hold Veronica on my lap, and he could touch her and see her from there. So I settled in to the chair and the nurse brought Veronica out. As soon as he was given the okay, Ethan rushed over and touched her face, then her feet and her hair. He even got to hold her hand (and she grabbed his finger and held on tight). He was so proud of Veronica, and of being a big brother. It was a great visit.

Ethan’s first visit with Veronica in the NICU.

Ethan was very insistent that we not neglect Colin in this visit. We had talked to the nurses in the NICU about possibly opening the blinds by Colin’s isolette so Ethan could at least see his little brother through the window. So while Ethan and I were visiting Veronica, John went to see Colin and arrange the details.

As our time with Veronica was winding down, Megan went to make sure the blinds were open and to tell John to get ready with little brother. Then she took Ethan into the hall and held him up so he could see Colin. Even though Colin is across the room from the window (it’s not a really wide room), Ethan was so excited to be able to see him.

The visit was a success. Ethan was bouncing all the way home with happiness, and now has been pestering us to schedule his next visit.
