We decided to do the traditional thing this Labor Day, so the pig family (we often are the pig family, and act out the picnic part of one of Ethan's favorite books — Cars and Trucks and Things That Go) packed a picnic and went to the beach. It ended up being a perfect beach day, and we got out early — so we had plenty of space to play. We even made it out before the boats started moving around, so the lake was perfectly clear, allowing us to watch fish and collect shells.
Ethan had a blast, and didn't seem to mind that the water was much colder than on our last visit to the beach. Finding all the tiny shells and collecting them in the bucket was plenty of distraction. And he managed to collect a good number of them, with some help from Mom and Dad.
After our collection was deemed sufficient, we moved the shells to the safety of our blanket, and headed back to play in the sand. Ethan took great joy in filling his bucket with leeks (wet sand), then carefully scooping in some leek juice (water) with his shovel to make leek gratin. (No, we've never eating anything called leek gratin, although it sounds like it might be good.) We probably made a dozen gratins before moving on to road building.
While I pulled out our lunch, John and Ethan built an elaborate series of roads in the sand. Ethan picked names for each of the roads, and told us exactly where they started and where they went to.
After lunch, we were able to again confirm that Ethan is indeed his father's son, and shares his love of ice cream sandwiches (and banana splits), before loading up the bikes and "swimming" upstream against the hoards of people heading to the beach. (I think we picked the better option, doing our beach trip in the morning.)
